Growing Pains

Rally wrote a great piece on the state of B&B Vegas, so I won’t rehash it. Simply put, Thursdays are busy days and quite often overlap with other tweetups and LVIMA (like this Thursday). We want to see the group grow and thrive again, and need your help to keep it going. Please take this survey to help get Beer & Blog Vegas back on track. And if you’re interested in volunteering to help out the elder drunks with planning and venue coordination, please make sure you leave your email in question #8. Thanks, and hope to see you at our next meeting.

Also, there’s a Stone Beer Dinner happening at Whole Foods on Las Vegas Blvd on Thursday, June 10th.  Cost is $30 per person, and the apparently have some tasty brews and bites. More information can be found here or you can RSVP with Sara in Marketing at sara.taylor@wholefoods.com.

WordCamp + Blog World + Beer & Blog!

To kick off the Blog World / WordCamp weekend, let’s all get together for giant Beer & Blog meetup! There will be hundreds of people in from out of town, and I’ve already been approached by at least half a dozen who are looking forward to coming out and tipping a pint with the Vegas crew.

When: Thursday October 15th at 5:30pm – 8:30pm
Where: Bar Louie in Town Square

Bar Louie has Happy Hour from 5pm – 7pm with food and drink specials.

I would like to give the bar a heads up as to roughly how many people are going to show. Head over to the Facebook event page and RSVP there! Thanks!

Whuffaoke update

Whuffaoke kicks off in San Francisco

Whuffaoke kicks off in San Francisco

For everyone who wasn’t at Beer & Blog tonight, Whuffaoke’s stop #3 is Vegas, baby! The main event is Friday at Town Square from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.  The Winnebago will be parked somewhere around the Yardhouse.  Bring your requests and a sense of humor.  Stop by and say hello to the Whuffaoke team: Tara, Tony, Alex, Emma, Karen, and Ridley the Tweeting pug. Special thanks to Liza for running ground support for Whuffaoke!  Also, if you’re looking for some new threads, why not sport them Whuffaoke style? Get them through SpreadShirt.

And send good thoughts to the team… the Winnie had a rough go of desert traveling from San Francisco to LA today.  They made it, but will need lots of “I think I can!” thoughts to get over the mountains and into Vegas.

Whuffaoke or Bust

Wuffaoke Logo

On July 17th & 18th, Tara @missrogue Hunt is bringing her Winnebago to Vegas for some karaoke fun.  Think Cash Cab except in an RV with singing… bound to be a ton of fun!  You can check out the Whuffaoke web page for more details, follow them on Twitter @whuffaoke, or check out the Facebook page for more information and events.    The official hashtag for the event is #WhuffaokeLAS.  I’ll post updates as the events unfold!

Special Event: Beer – Animal Style

Last week at the Monster Vegas Tweetup held at Diablo’s, I was introduced to Shelly O’Connor from Whole Foods. She mentioned an upcoming event called “Beer – Animal Style.” I think you’d agree that by name alone, that’s an event that our group will definitely want to attend!

So here’s the scoop.

Beer – Animal Style is beer tasting event where you pay five bucks and get to sample 40 beers. Your five bucks doesn’t stop working for you there, either. You’ll also receive a souvenir glass, there will be 3 restaurant demos and, of course, the Famous Whole Foods Market Sampling. Oh, and if that’s not enough, proceeds from the event will be going to the Lied Animal Shelter!

Here are the details:

Date: June 27th, 2009
Time: 2-5 PM
Location: Whole Foods Market inside Town Square
Cost: $5 (cash at the door)

I hope to see you all there!

Where do you want to meet?

If you haven’t figured it out already, Beer and Blog takes direction from what the community wants. There’s nobody in charge dictating the when and the where. The goal is to make as many people happy and comfortable so that we can focus on far more important things… like beering and blogging.

Last Thursday we ventured outside of the Freakin’ Frog to try out a new place; Bar Louie. We had a pretty decent turn-out with 25-30 people drifting in and out all evening long. Everybody seemed to have had a good time (I know I did). We did run in to an issue with the fact that they put our entire group on one tab making it a little confusing for who owed what at the end of the night. But aside from that, all the comments I received about the place were positive.

At the beginning of the evening I spoke with the manager about possibly moving our weekly meeting to Bar Louie. He said that if we had a set day and time (we do), he would be more than happy to set up reserved tables for us and would even include power strips for the laptop users. I will be speaking with the manager again today to discuss the issue with putting the entire group on one tab and I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to comply with our need for separate checks.

So, assuming the issue with the check is a non-issue, Bar Louie seemed like a pretty nice fit. But, like I said, this is more about what the community as a whole would like to do. So, I ask you, Where do you want to meet? If you don’t care for Freakin’ Frog or Bar Louie and have a suggestion for another location, please leave a comment on the post or in the poll.

Is there someone you’d like to see speak at Beer & Blog? A blog-related topic you’d like to learn more about?

We’d like to host some occasional (about monthly) talks about blogging-related topics at Beer & Blog.

Is there someone you would like to see as a guest speaker at Beer & Blog? Is there a blog-related topic you’d like to learn more about? Please post your suggestions for speakers and/or topics in the comments, and comment on others’ suggestions.

Feel free to suggest speakers who live out of town, too… the great thing about living in Vegas is it seems like everyone visits eventually. :) We’ll let them know we’d like to organize something during their next trip.

Topic of the week

First a quick thank you to everybody who made it out to the Freakin’ Frog last Thursday. We had another great turn-out. Personally, I spoke with several people about all sorts of blogging and social media habits and had a great time teaching a small group of new-comers a few things about Twitter and the joys of TweetDeck.

As Jackie mentioned on Thursday, we are going to try and schedule bloggers to come in and give short presentations to our group that can provide insight in to different aspects of blogging. From the very basics of blogging 101 to “Make Money Blogging”. We’ll try to schedule one speaker per month, but that will vary based on availability.

With that said, I would like to propose something far less formal than a presentation. We’ll call it “Topic of the week.” Anybody and everybody can suggest topics for upcoming weeks by leaving a comment on this post. Then, on Friday, we’ll pick a new topic for the upcoming week (unless we have a speaker already scheduled for that week, in which case we’ll skip it) and post it for everybody to start thinking about and come to BnB on Thursday with your input.

To kick things off for this week’s BnB meet-up, the topic is: New plugins you’ve recently found that have solved a need for you or your blog.

Of course, this is NOT a requirement. It was just a thought I had about how to make sure that we each get to walk away from every Thursday night meet-up with some new information. If it doesn’t fly, well, there’s always the beer. ;)
